How to make a youth soccer highlight reel your players will love
A highlight reel is the part of game video that players and families actually watch. A good one is short, shows every player doing something well and is easy to share. It doesn't take video-editing skills, just a few choices about what goes in.
Decide who it's for
A team reel after a game celebrates the group: the goals, the best team move, a great save. A player reel over a season is for that player and their family. For older players thinking about high school or college teams, a recruiting reel is a different thing again: longer, focused on their position, with their full games available too.
Choose involvement, not just goals
If the reel is only goals, the same two or three players are in every one. Look for a good pass that started the move, a tackle, a save, a run that made space. Every player in the team should be in the team reel at least once over a few games.
Keep each clip short and in context
- Start each clip four to eight seconds before the moment, so the viewer sees it develop.
- End two to four seconds after.
- For a family or team reel, one to three minutes in total is plenty.
- Put the best moment first; people decide in the first ten seconds whether to keep watching.
Make the player easy to find
In a wide shot, a ten-year-old in a team of matching shirts is hard to pick out. A short title card with their name and number helps, and so does choosing clips where they are near the ball.
Share it with care
Send reels privately to the team and families rather than posting them publicly, and check your club's rules. Music is nice but copyrighted songs can get a video muted or removed on social platforms.
